How to run a cook stove on alcohol

1.  To make the body of the stove, retrieve a few Coke or other aluminum soda cans or an empty tin of Altoids.  Make sure to completely rinse out the cans and dry them.

2.  If using soda cans, cut them in half.  Then, to avoid cutting yourself on any sharp edges, bend the cut edges about one-quarter of an inch towards the middle of the cans.

3.  If using a soda can, fill the half can to the top with common perlite.  If using the empty Altoid tin, fill the bottom half of the tin to the top with perlite, making sure you are able to close the lid once filled.  Perlite can be purchased from any garden supply shop.

4.  Acquire a small piece of metal screening, such as window screen material.  Cut out a circular piece if using a soda can, a rectangular piece if using an Altoid tin.  Whichever you use, make sure to trim each piece of screening one-quarter of an inch longer than the width of the can or tin.

5.  Place the cut section of screen over the perlite, tucking the screen edges under the folded edges of the soda can or under the inner rim of the Altoid tin.

6.  Obtain a squirt bottle and fill it with rubbing alcohol.  When you are ready to fire up the stove, squirt the alcohol onto the perlite, making sure to coat the perlite evenly.  Light the stove by setting a lit match to the screen; this will keep the stove fueled and lit for approximately one hour.

7.  Once the fire has burned out, you can transport your Altoid tin stove by securing the top half onto it, or by placing the other half of the empty soda can onto your soda can stove.  Dispose of the depleted perlite once it turns black and then refill as needed.
